Kanchenjunga Expedition

Kangchenjunga (8586m) is the third highest mountain in the world, is located in eastern Nepal. The mountain has five separate peaks, the name meaning ‘The Five Treasures of the Snow’ in the local dialect. Climbing attempts on the mountain began in 1930, a European expedition consisting of German, Austrian, Swiss and British mountaineers making an attempt from the Indian (Sikkim) side. Then in June 1955 a British expedition under Charles Evans put four men on the top, though they did not actually stand right at the summit as local people asked them not to as it was believed a god lived there. There are four different routes to the mountain peak with both its south and east side providing opportunities for new routes. It is believed that the east flank of the South Summit is by far the most difficult face route.
